Who We Are
We’re on a mission to help people engage the Bible more faithfully, which we think will then produce a more responsible theology and a more ethical embodiment of Jesus in the world. To engage the Bible faithfully is to read it contextually–respecting the authors’ meaning, not inventing meaning for ourselves.
This involves recognizing several things: (1) that the Bible is OOOLD, (2) that it is an anthology–a library of different books put together over a vast period of time, (3) and that it wasn't written to me!?
We’re trying our darndest to connect normal Christians to solid scholarship that helps illuminate originalist readings of the Bible, so that we’re tethered to a mooring that isn’t constantly changing with culture when we move from Bible reading to developing our theology, ethics, and everything else.
Let's face it, we American evangelicals ARE BAD AT THIS! We have all sorts of weird beliefs and practices that aren’t at all built on good bible interpretation, and sometimes, these beliefs go beyond what is just strange and actually start approaching what is dangerous or damaging
A lot of people growing up in our churches are noticing these strange and unhealthy beliefs and are rejecting Jesus wholesale. We feel the pain that these folks are feeling. We recognize the same problems, and we mourn the same hypocrisy and lack of authentic Jesus-following we are seeing in large parts of the American Evangelical church.
Though we respect and empathize with those who go through a journey of “deconstruction,” we think that the proverbial baby need not be thrown out with the bathwater. We think Jesus’ kingdom is a good kingdom, both for humans and for the rest of creation. What the evangelical church needs is BETTER BIBLE READING that produces BETTER ETHICS and BETTER THEOLOGICAL PARADIGMS, hence our namesake.
So, instead of a complete deconstruction, how about a reparadigm, if you will? A paradigm shift that will unapologetically leave all the cheap stuff behind (the culture wars, the big money, the political power) and that will instead ground us as faithful Jesus-followers in this complicated, violent, and vitriolic world, so that the love of Jesus and the good news of his kingdom can heal this world, and our very selves.
